"WHAT are you doing here?"

"You thought I was kidding?"
Seriously, what motivated you to click on a link labeled, "Don't Click Here?"

The answer is a simple yet very effective marketing strategy called "reverse psychology." Many parents, teachers, and kids know it simply as a tool that works to help them get their way.

How many of you have either had... or overheard... an exchange that typically goes like this:
Parent: Bet you can't drink that whole glass of milk in 10 seconds.

Kid: Oh yeah?
Don't feel bad if something like that worked on you well into your pre-teens... it usually does.

The point is

It still works... you clicked on the link!  And could have found almost anything on this page—a discount coupon, an irresistible offer, a hard hitting message to make a donation, anything that might help the Internet business owner achieve his or her goals.

Remember... you don't have to be selling anything. You may be asking your visitors to sign up for your non-profit's mailing list, or to fill out a form requesting more information.

If you put visitors in the frame of mind to buy on your preceding web pages, a large percentage of them will do just that, or whatever it is you want them to on your site.

The bottom line is, reverse psychology can get your visitors to go where you want them to go on your site.  Then simply ask them to do whatever it is you want them to do.

Begging won't get clicks

And getting the right clicks is what it's all about!

If the link to this page had been, "Please, please... please click here!", would you have clicked on it as soon as you did?  Would you have clicked on it at all?

Take a good look at your web site.  What kind of impression does it make?

Does your web site shout, "Please, please, pretty please just stay on my site!", or something similar?

Have you clicked on many banner ads lately?

So instead of "please, please", try a little reverse psychology... or something else to help you get the clicks you need to reach your goals.
